Perineum soreness after child birth comes as a shock to many women. After nine months of pregnancy, you probably thought that the hardest part was to deliver the baby, right? This may not be 100% true since you will have to heal your wound and experience soreness around your perineum and rectum for up to five weeks.
Child birth causes discomfort due to the tears on your vaginal wall. The pain and time it will take to heal will depend on your method of delivery. The wound you incurred while giving birth will take around two weeks to heal but will continue to feel sensitive for up to six weeks.
There ways to help you relieve the pain no matter your method of delivery. Spray the area with warm water using a squirt bottle after urinating. This prevents urine from irritating the area. Put crushed ice in a surgical glove and place it on the area for a few minutes. This helps in reducing swelling and also numbs the skin. Prepare a warm bath where only your buttocks will be submerged in water for 30 minutes. You can also dip a cloth in hot water and place it on the area. This helps ease discomfort. If you the pain is too much, you can use some local anesthesia to numb the area.
To reduce pressure off your perineum, you should avoid standing for long periods of time. You should also try to lie down on your side often and avoid sitting. Tight clothing and underwear can slow the healing process. Wear dresses and sweat pants since they will allow your perineum to breath. Drink lots of water and eat a balanced diet. For the first two weeks, avoid any exercises and allow your wound to heal. If the pain does not ease with time, visit the doctor and let him or her examine your wound. Perineum soreness after childbirth is normal and it will ease with time.
